This species of Clematis (also called Downy Clematis) is an April/May-flowering, semi-woody climbing Clematis which typically grows 6-10' and produces nodding, lantern-shaped, blue/blue-violet flowers up to 3" across. Not content with a spectacular show in the spring, macropetala sports attractive, fluffy seedheads later in the year and may even give a sparse second crop of flowers towards the end of the season. Like other climbing clematises, it can be trained to climb a wall, trellis, fence, arbor, porch, lamp post or other stationary structure. It can also be planted to sprawl through large, later-blooming shrubs as it flowers so early. The blooms appear on old wood. A vigorous, free-flowering variety that will thrive in any site. Clematis macropetala Is very cold hardy and may be grown as far north as Alaska.
