Taraxacum officinale The Dandelion is an herb, native to Southern Europe. It was brought by early settlers to North America where it has become widely naturalized. While the Dandelion can be a pesky weed in lawns and gardens, it is also very versatile and can be put to good use. Young dandelion leaves are used in salads, vegetables and soups. Dandelion flowerheads are used to make wine. The roots, dried, roasted and ground, make a delicious drink. And the herb is also used as a tonic. Easy to cultivate.

A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows.

Mortgage Lifter Tomato

The now legendary “Mortgage Lifter” tomato was brought into being in the early 1940s by an auto mechanic named MC "Radiator Charlie" Byles.  Charlie developed the tomato by cross-breeding four of the largest-fruited tomatoes he could find.  The offspring turned out to be so good that Charlie was able to sell the young tomato plants for $1 each (in the 1940s) – and to sell enough of the plants to pay off the mortgage on his West Virginia home.  These are big, meaty tomatoes, which can weigh as much as 4 lbs.  Very productive and fairly disease resistant – well worth a try.

Typha latifolia Cattails can be found in marshes and wetlands on almost every continent. Indeed, cattails are a familiar sight along creeks, riverbanks and country roads througout the world. They are easy to spot -- their distinctive seedheads resemble tall, brown corn dogs atop sturdy stems reaching up to 8 feet in height. Cattails add interest to pond settings and make excellent dried cut flowers, either alone or in mixed arrangements.

Cattails are a very important food for wildlife and are supposedly quite edible and tasty for humans, too (Euell Gibbons devotes a whole chapter to Cattails in his book, "Stalking the Wild Asparagus."). Cattails require moist soil, such as the edge of a pond, or can be grown in shallow water up to about 6" in depth. They are easy to grow in any climate if given sufficient water, though they can become invasive if not contained.

Australia's ancient grass tree is a remarkable, long-lived plant, but one seldom seen outside its native habitat. A dense tuft of narrow, arching, grassy leaves 3 ft long sprout from a trunk made up of a mass of old leaf bases held together by natural resin. It takes 30 years or more for the leaf tuft to rise high above the trunk. Spears of small white or cream flowers, smelling of honey, appear after 10 to 15 years, but only erratically; often it will bloom after a bushfire. Their natural habitat is an open scrub and dry heath environment. Culture in cool greenhouse.

Yucca brevifolia
Joshua Tree

Qty $ 3.62 /packet

10 seeds
Yucca brevifolia No two are alike, but the Joshua Tree is distinctive and easily recognizable. Technically, it is not a tree but rather the largest of all Yuccas and a member of the Agave family. It thrives in the higher elevations of the Mohave Desert in the Southwestern U.S. and may reach a height of 30 feet or more (though not in our lifetime -- it is very slow-growing).

Referring to the Joshua Tree, Barbara Wilson of salon.com writes: "It grows the way it does, tall and branched, like a Dr. Seuss drawing, multilimbed with tufts for hands, because of a weevil. It would like to grow straight, but the weevil irritates its very being, threatens its plant sanity. The Joshua tree, struggling to outrun the weevil, moves outward, building new plant cells that eventually form a new limb. It responds to pain and irritation by growing."

May be grown in a container and makes quite a conversation piece. Likes full sun and needs very little water.
